Hakomi

Hakomi Mindful Somatic Psychotherapy is a mindfulness and body-centered therapy which encourages self-understanding in a gentle, safe and supportive way. The body is where we hold our physical and emotional pain, our traumas, and deep-seated ways of being and believing, which can often lie outside our conscious awareness. Hakomi offers an opportunity to learn mindfulness techniques and access the wisdom in the body to explore some of the things which may be troubling you. Hakomi therapy offers you the opportunity to develop a greater sense of ease and self-understanding.

The Hakomi Method

The Hakomi Method was developed in the 1970’s by therapist Ron Kurtz and colleagues in USA. It incorporates the wisdom of Buddhism, Daoism and body-centered therapies such as Reichian work, the Feldenkrais Method, Bioenergetics and Gestalt therapy. The Hakomi Method is grounded in a set of principles: Mindfulness, Loving presence, Non-violence, Unity, Organicity and Mind–Body Holism. It is supported by current neuroscience research in relational attachment, trauma, the vagus nerve polyvagal theory, and the plasticity of the brain. If you would like to learn more about it you can check out Hakomi NZ

I offer this therapy modality as a Hakomi Graduate Therapist, having completed the Hakomi Professional Training in NZ (2015-2016). I have also trained in Mindful and Somatic Approaches to working with Trauma in NZ (with Dr Paris Williams 2020). I continue with ongoing experiential learning and study in Hakomi and somatic approaches to working with trauma.
